Testing with users is a key element of the product development and UX process. It allows for ideas and design decisions to be tested by a group of people representative of your target users. This allows you to find out, what works and what doesn’t for your users, enabling changes to be made before the final design handoff and development begins.
I intend to complete two rounds of user testing:
My first round of user testing is mainly designed on validating the core of my product offering, my aims are to test that the user journey through the product is logical and makes sense. As well as testing that I have not forgot key elements, I also want to put my content to the test to see if I have met the goals I set myself for clear easy to understand, plain English content.
As this is testing core user flows, I do not need the visual elements of my app to be complete, in fact often too much visual stimulus can mean that my test participants can be distracted by it and miss issues with the actual underlying flows and navigation. So, the prototypes I create will be without any branding, intentional use of colour, illustrations or other visual elements I will create for the final prototype.
One area I have designed to be much closer to the final product is the text content, my thinking being that as text and the need for that text to be easily understandable, is so key to my product I need to test it as soon as possible, so that I have time to correct and iterate on any issues this initial round of testing throws up.
As this round of user testing will be unmoderated, I will need to set up very clear and easy to follow test scenarios for my participants to complete. My plan is for this to take two forms, clearly labelled Figma prototypes which will explain each task and then allow my users to complete them. Followed by a Google Form asking users to rate and review their experience completing each task. While there is specific software available to complete user testing, such as Maze, the free versions are limited and I do not have the time to spend learning a new tool for this task. I am familiar with Figma prototypes and Google Forms so I can set these up quickly and they will give me results I can easily analyse and gain insight from.
The tasks I intend to set are:
After each task, participants will be asked a few simple questions about their experience, via a Google Form.
These questions will be:
