For the third project of this semester we are tasked with designing a phone app for either ten year olds or undergraduates to help them learn about the Sustainable Development Goals as set in the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development adopted by all United Nations member states in 2015.

There are 17 Sustainable development goals:

The Sustainable Development Goals

To start off this project I wanted to get a better understanding of the seventeen sustainable development goals, what they consist of, why each one is important and which ones would lend themselves to being part of an educational app. As these goals were agreed eight years ago now I also wanted to see what work had been done and what progress has been made towards achieving the aims of the goals.

The first thing that I discovered was that each of the seventeen goals was further broken down into a range of targets, each of which had its own indicators of success. In total the seventeen goals are broken down into 169 targets, so with basic maths around 10 targets per goal. The goals are really the overarching framework of a much longer list of actions that need to happen.

As you click through each sustainable development goal on the UN website dedicated to sustainable development goals (*https://sdgs.un.org/goals*) you are met with an illustration containing some key facts and progress from the most recent annual report into SDGs before moving into a breakdown of the targets and indicators for that goal. For example here is the illustration and list of targets for goal 9 Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure:
