To get started with my immersive prototype around the story of the Apollo Space Program, and in particular Apollo 11, I decided to start by looking online for some visual inspiration. This inspiration will help me decide on the visual style of my own project as well as providing inspiration for my layout and content.
I decided to create my moodboard using Miro, as I find it is the perfect program to collect lots of inspiration in one place, and put it all together for me to review and use.

The first pieces of inspiration I found were newspaper and magazine front pages from the time of the Apollo 11 mission. What I really like on these was the clear typographic hierarchy and use of emotive images. As the content I have been provided with for this project is mainly text, typography will be a key part of my design and I feel the way these publications have very clear titles, subtitles and then body text could be a formula that I follow to help my readers follow the story of the mission.
I also like the use of italics for the famous Neil Armstrong quote that he said as he set foot on the moon for the first time. There are some key quotes from the moon landing mission which I believe are very useful in telling the overall story of the mission itself, therefore how I treat these quotes typographically will be very important in ensuring they make the impact within the story.
I also found a series of cutaway drawings which show different elements of the Apollo spacecraft, they have all the major components marked. I find these drawings great in the way they allow you to see inside such complicated machines and if not understand them at least gain a respect for how they are constructed and the amount of engineering knowledge that went into creating them.
In a similar vein are these images from the Columbia on display in the National Air and Space museum in the USA. Again these are diagrams and information for use by the crew, they were designed with practicality rather than aesthetics in mind, however, I believe their simplicity and ease of use are important factors I need to consider in my own design.
While scrolling through Pinterest I also found a number of graphic design pieces, mainly posters designed as travel posters to different parts of space. I really like the display fonts used on these and the colour palette and simple shapes. These are good overall inspiration for how my project should look as a whole, not too much text, strong visuals and a colour palette based on a dark background colour like space itself.
I also found similar style pieces in advertising from the 60s and 70s in my research, these included pieces for airlines, some oil cans and a book cover for a book by Alfred Hitchcock. They all have a particular style about them, strong eye-catching colours and bold typography which I believe if used correctly in my design could really add to the story I am trying to tell.
